The Lexington community responded immediately when Comair Flight 5191 crashed. Crisis response services were offered and were extremely helpful immediately after the disaster. The need for grief support however continues much longer. Hospice recognizes that grief is very unique and what one individual finds comforting and helpful another may not. It is also difficult to put a timeline on someone’s grief. Hospice of the Bluegrass (HOB) has been providing bereavement support for more than 30 years to anyone in the community regardless of whether their loved one was a Hospice patient.
HOB has created a plan to offer a combination of specialized materials and services for the families of flight 5191. If a family member does not live in Kentucky, Hospice will help them find support in their community. Services will include:
- HOB formed an advisory group composed of family members. The Advisory Committee allowed families an opportunity to tell us directly what additional services might be of benefit.
- A one year memorial service was held on the anniversary of the plane crash. The Advisory Committee helped to plan this remembrance.
- Resources were made available for family members of all ages – children, young adults and adults. The extensive Hospice of the Bluegrass Library was also available to anyone needing resources.
- Holiday Grief Group. A six week support group for family members was offered. The group was designed to increase support for individuals.
- Individual and family sessions.
- All existing support groups are open to any family member wishing to attend. Groups include the Family Support Program (for adults, children and teens), Spouse Loss group, Heart to Heart (a group for individuals that complete the spouse loss group and want additional support) and General Grief Group.
- Bereavement camps for children ages 6-12 are available in two locations; a Family camp is held in the summer and is open to any family.
