Conference Description and Objectives

The focus of the “Art and Science of Palliative Medicine” conference is to update the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals providing care to persons and families living with serious illness. Palliative care begins at diagnosis of a serious illness and transitions into hospice care. Palliative medicine is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, and stress of a serious illness—whatever the diagnosis.

The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family. Palliative care is provided by a team of doctors, nurses, and other specialists who work with a patient's other doctors to provide an extra layer of support. Palliative care is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness, and can be provided together with curative treatment. This conference will give you the tools to grow professionally in palliative medicine.

Target audience: This conference is focused on Physicians, ARNP’s, PA’s, Nurses, and Long Term Care Administrators. Other members of the interdisciplinary team will find value in the program and may want to attend.

Overall behavioral conference objectives:

After completing this conference, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the role of palliative medicine and hospice in today’s practice and explore the future of the science.
  • Explain the purpose and role of the interdisciplinary team required to provide effective palliative care.
